The Flu and You

To the Campus Community:

H1N1 flu cases continue to increase in Central Minnesota, and the University is working hard to address significant challenges in regards to absenteeism and the presence of sick people on campus. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will continue to serve as the primary guidance for our campus. The Student Health Service is focusing efforts on seeing students, answering telephone calls, and providing leadership to the University in decision making processes as the HINI flu changes in the community.

The University would like to restate some important points to follow to help protect the health of our campus community:

  • If you are in close contact with someone who has the flu, don’t panic and don’t blame. Influenza is currently very prevalent in our community, and many people are getting sick despite our best efforts. It is important that we continue to do all that we can to limit the spread of illness to others and focus on the general health of the community.
  • Students and employees who are sick with influenza-like illness (fever/chills with cough or sore throat) should stay home until they are free of fever for at least 24 hours. Students should also remember not to go to work to avoid making others ill.
  • Faculty and supervisors should not require notes from medical providers, including the university’s Student Health Service. Keep in mind that absence may also occur to care for family members who are sick.

The University of course cannot control to what extent each individual follows these guidelines, but we ask for patience, understanding and diligence as we all go through this challenge.
