Biography

Niloufer Pic

Niloufer Merchant has been at St. Cloud State University since 1991, and is Professor & Department Chair of Educational Leadership & Community Psychology. She has a doctoral degree in Counseling from the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, and a double masters in Counseling and Psychology from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and University of Pune, India, respectively. In 1999-2000 she served as the Interim Cultural Diversity Co-Coordinator for St. Cloud School District 742, and in 2002-2003 was the Interim Director for the Women’s Center at SCSU.

Niloufer’s areas of interest include multicultural and gender issues in counseling. She is particularly interested in working with underserved populations, and has been involved in grass-roots community organizing in the area. Niloufer has been active in the community and school district in addressing the issues of cultural diversity. Most recently she co-led a program that prepares university women student mentors to work with 7-12th grade girls of color in the schools. She also provides in-services and trainings in the area of cultural competence. Her research and publication areas include racial and cultural identity, multicultural group work and the use of qualitative research methods. Niloufer is an active member of the American Counseling Association, and the Association for Specialists in Group Work and has served on several committees and projects over the years.  She also served as the Board President for the Multicultural Center of Central Minnesota from 2005-2007.
