Augusto Rojas, Teacher Development, has an article accepted for publication in the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. “September 11: the Aftermath,” addressing the impact of new INS regulations on Latino students in American universities.

Glen Palm, Child and Family Studies, has received grant support for his work with fathers and families. The Minnesota Humanities Commission and the Bremer Foundation is supporting a program that will kick-off work to create a pilot project sponsored by the commission on “Dads and Kids.”

John Goodland, President, Institute for Educational Inquiry, keynoted the National Network for Educational Renewal Conference Oct. 24-26. COE faculty present included: Julie Andrzejewski, Human Relations and Multicultural Education; Joane W. McKay and Nancy Bacharach, Dean’s office; Robin Hasslen and Ming Chi Own, Child and Family Studies; Kathy Coverdale and Teresa W. Heck, Office of Clinical Experiences.

Virgina Lazenby Pierce, Teacher Development, has announced plans for the 5th Annual Dessert Fest, a scholarship recognition for COE students and donors.

Steve Hornstein, Teacher Development, was the invited keynoter at the World Language Conference in Lagos, Nigeria. Hornstein serves as the President of the Whole Language Umbrella for the National Council of Teachers of English.

Larry Ouellette, Minnesota Highway Safety Center and Research Unit, was recognized at the AAA Minneapolis: 100 Years of Service...100 Safety Heroes Honors Breakfast in Bloomington, Minn.

Gary Schnellert, Educational Leadership and Community Psychology, and Plamen Miltenoff, Learning Resources and Technology Services, were invited to present papers on international partnerships at a conference in Belarus.

Greg Coverdale, Teacher Development, published “Inquiry is for the Birds: Promoting Standards-Based Science Learning Through Backyard Birdwatching” in Science Scope.

Early Childhood/Special Education Summer Institute was funded by a grant from the Minnesota Department of Children, Families and Learning. SCSU is the host institution for this grant. There were 225 faculty, speakers and graduate students participating in the Institute. Faculty from the College of Education were Cheri Gilman and Fran Umerski, Child and Family Studies and Pamm Minden, Research Director.

Manijeh Daneshpour and Michael Mayhew, Educational Leadership and Community Psychology, hosted a statewide Marriage and Family Conference featuring Dr. Lanny Law who spoke on the subject “God Know Marriage Isn’t Always Easy.” Graduates from the SCSU Marriage and Family Therapy certificate program were also honored.

Kate Steffens, Special Education and Director of Assessment and Accreditation, has been named to the NCATE Board of Examiners.

Glenn Street, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science/Adult Fitness, and a team of researchers and students from SCSU’s Human Performance Lab have improved amputees’ experience with new technology.

Mark Wagstaff, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science, and Tom Heck, Campus Recreation, have received MnSCU grants to support their work in outdoor education classes and new-student wilderness orientation.

Francis Kazemek, Teacher Development, recently had two articles published: “An American in Norway” in the Spring 2002 issue of The State of Reading; and “Monk, Bird, ‘Trane, and Miles: Jazz in the English Language Arts Program” in the Spring/Summer 2002 issue of The Alan Review.

Mark Moore, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Sport Science, was elected to the Board of Directors of MAHPERD as the Vice President Elect of the Recreation/Sport Division.

Leslie R. Green, Director of Cultural Diversity, was a presenter at the conference and 35th annual board meeting dinner of the Pilot City Neighborhood Services in North Minneapolis. His topic was “Success and Survival in Hostile Environments.”

The College of Education Calendar of Events is now in service! The COE lists events taking place on campus,
national and state annual meetings and weekly/monthly COE committee meetings. Activities occuring off campus are appropriate for the Events Calendar only if co-sponsored by the COE or a COE department/center.
