New masters in student life and developmentLinwood Vereen, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education and Educational Psychology began implementing the new College Student Development master’s program in the CEEP department in the College of Education at St. Cloud State University, upon his arrival at SCSU in the fall of 2001. The program, now in its second year, trains graduate students in the areas of student life and development within the college setting. Students who graduate with a masters in college student development seek employment in a variety of positions at the two and four-year colleges including counseling, advising, financial aid, residential life, career development, multicultural and minority student services, admissions, records and registration, student activities, students with disabilities, and other student support services. “The only requirement is having a strong desire to work in a two or four year college setting and have a passion for working with students and various student organizations,” Vereen said. The college student development program came about from a need expressed by students, professional staff and faculty. A special studies major was previously offered. Vereen was recruited to apply for the position and is now in his second year at SCSU. The program has grown from three students to 12 and is on course to seek accreditation within the next three years. This spring the program will have its first graduating class. Vereen teaches core courses in the CEEP department and also specialization courses in the graduate program in CSD. He is the coordinator for the CSD program. The other graduate programs within CEEP are Rehabilitation and School Counseling headed by John Hotz and Terrance Petersen respectively. Vereen says he “is excited about the current students in the program and believes that they are exceptional leaders and will do exciting and phenomenal things within the field.” |
