Alumni honored at Harvest Moon

This year's Alumni Leadership Award for the College of Education was awarded to Wilber Herrington (the award was accepted by his wife, Virginia) and Ronald Hochstrasser. Two College of Education alumni were honored at Harvest Moon. Wilber J. Herrington, Class of 50, and Ronald A. Hochstrasser, Class of 88, are the 2002-2003 College of Education Leadership Award recipients.

A World War II veteran, Will Herrington chose SCSU because of its well-known education and art programs. Will married his wife, Virginia, in his senior year and graduated from SCSU in 1950 with a B.S. degree in physical education, art and health.

The Herringtons soon settled in Oregon where Will served as a high school teacher and coach for 33 years. As an art teacher, he taught watercolor, oil painting, calligraphy, pottery, photography and advised the yearbook. He credited art with getting him the teaching job which gave him the opportunity to coach football, basketball, golf, skiing, softball, baseball and track.

Unfortunately, Will passed away this past spring. All of Will’s past credentials, honors and recognitions are too numerous to mention here, but his life and career are probably best encapsulated by a comment made by his wife, Virginia: “Will was a true renaissance man.”

Ronald Hochstrasser is a 1988 graduate of SCSU with a BS degree in Biology Education with a minor in Chemistry. Ron spent the next 10 years teaching and coaching soccer in Boca Raton, Florida.

In 1991, Ron switched to Olympic Heights Community High School and taught a variety of chemistry, biology, ethics, research and ecology classes, and also served as Director of the Core Team, Head Girls soccer coach and Assistant Athletic Director. During the summers of ’96 and ’97, Ron taught physical science and earth science to children of migrant farm families at Lynn University’s Migrant Summer Institute.

In July 2001, Ron was one of six teachers nationwide selected to participate in the National Science Foundation’s 2002/2003 Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and the Arctic Program in Alaska. He was selected for the NSF program because of his achievements as an educator, his interest in science and his commitment to transfer the research experience to his students, colleagues and community.
