The 18th Annual
Minnesota Heartland Economics Challenge
Teams of students representing high schools in Central Minnesota are invited to compete in a series of challenging tests of their economic understanding and reasoning abilities. Participants will compete in both individual and team categories.

Who is Eligible?
High school students in Central Minnesota. No formal course in economics is necessary or required, just a basic social studies background and an interest in economics.

How is the Challenge set up?
1. Each participant takes 15-question, 5-option multiple choice tests in each of the following areas:
Round I: Microeconomics
Round II: Macroeconomics
Round III: International Economics and Comparative Systems
2. Scoring of individual tests will be as follows: 10 points will be awarded for each correct response, 4 points will be subtracted for each incorrect response, and 0 points will be given for questions left unanswered.
3. Each team will consist of up to 5 members (minimum 3) with the sum of the top 3 individual scores on the team representing the team score.
4. Team scores will be posted after each round and there will be a “half-time” break after the first two rounds.
5. The first two rounds are individual rounds with each team member taking the test on their own. Round III is taken as a team, with one test submitted for the entire team.
6. Round IV is a “lightning round” consisting of the top two finishing schools in each of three divisions-AP, Large School, Small School. The winner of this lightning round is declared the winner of the team trophy in its division. Fourth round questions are in the area of current events, economic applications, and pot pourri.
What are the benefits?
1. All participants receive a MINNESOTA HEARTLAND ECONOMICS CHALLENGE T-shirt, “half-time” refreshments, and are the guests of honor at the awards luncheon.
2. Team trophies will be awarded to the top 2 school teams in each of three divisions.
3. Individual awards will be given to the top 4 individuals in each of three divisions as follows:
1st $100 cash plus trophy
2nd $75 cash plus trophy
3rd $50 cash plus trophy
4th $25 cash plus trophy
What are the costs?
There are no fees or luncheon costs. All that is required is a little time and interest plus transportation to and from the SCSU campus. The MINNESOTA HEARTLAND ECONOMICS CHALLENGE is sponsored by the SCSU Center for Economic Education with a grant from the Minnesota Council on Economic Education with the cooperation of the SCSU Department of Economics. The Economics Challenge is supported in Minnesota by Ameriprise Financial and banking institutions located throughout the state.
