IEEE Paper Contest/Banquet
Electrical and computer engineering students from SCSU recently took top honors at two Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) paper competitions. SCSU's senior team took first, second and third place in a section-level contest with students from the University of Minnesota. They went on to take first and second place in the highest IEEE level of competition, a regional contest of 62 student branches in 10 Midwestern states.
In announcing the first-place regional honor, however, contest coordinators reported that they had been questioned by judges regarding the status of the SCSU entrants. "Certain judges thought our paper was too good to be written by undergraduate students," said Michael Glazos, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at SCSU. But the work was, indeed, done completely by the students and the judges recognized that with the honors they bestowed.
The paper contests recognize research; technical, written, and verbal communication skills; and presentation skills, all proficiences that the IEEE says are key to successful engineering careers. Evaluation and judging are based on roughly half for the written presentation and half for the oral presentation.
Taking honors at the
Twin Cities concept were SCSU seniors who graduated
in the spring:
First place - Keith Kieffer and Jennifer Struffert,
Active Light Organ
Second place - Nick Orndorff and Jason Scott, The
Ultimate MP3 Player
Third place - Joseph Dalton, Wireless MP3 System With
Two-Way Communication
The regional
contest in Milwaukee, which was open to students at 62 campuses
in the Midwest, brought honors to:
First Place - Dalton, Wireless MP3 System With Two-Way
Communication
Tie for Second Place - Kieffer and Struffert, Active
Light Organ
The participation of the SCSU student teams was overseen by Dr. Glazos, who is the Faculty Advisor to the SCSU IEEE Student Branch.
