Meeting Minutes

November 14, 2006

Attending: Dr. Deng, Dr. Thamvichai, Dr. Petzold, Dr. Zheng, Dr. Vogt, Dr. Yu, Dr. Bekkala, Dr. Byun

The discussion revolved around the proposed General Education goal areas, and their impact on the Engineering Curriculum. Some issues:

1. Our students currently take MATH 221 for Core area 3, Mathematical/Statistical Thinking. (Covers 3 credits of Core)

2. Our students take or are “waived from” 9 credits of Distribution Area B, Natural Sciences.

3. Our students receive a 3 credit waiver in the Distribution (our students only take 6 credits from Area A and 6 credits from Area C, for a total of 12 credits. Other students should take 15 credits at least from these two areas.)

4. Total General Education credits in our curriculum or waived = 15 credits.

5. Our students need to take 25 credits of General Education outside of our curriculum. The goal will be to find at least 15 credits under the new General Education goal areas that fit into or are currently part of our curriculum.

One missing goal area, according to the committee, was anything that dealt with a student’s understanding of technology and its implications to society. We will address this with Dr. Litterst when she visits.
