Curriculum Committee
Meeting Minutes
October 10, 2006
Present: Dr. Vogt, Dr. Thamvichai, Dr. Deng, Dr. Petzold, Dr. Zheng
1. Assessment data, Prerequisite Exams:
Some discrepancies were noted in the prerequisite exam. Students scored poorly in areas that should have been covered in the preceding course.
Motion: The Curriculum Committee recommends that all faculty carefully read the description of the courses they teach and insure that they properly cover the contents described in the course description. (Zheng/Vogt) Passed
It was also felt that the faculty teaching various groups of courses should review their courses and agree upon course content.
Motion: The Curriculum Committee advises faculty to confine the assessment exam to the course content of the previous course. (Zheng/Thamvichai) Passed. We will review the ECE 202 Spring 2006 prerequisite exam for further study.
Motion: The Curriculum Committee advises faculty that instructors in 200-300 level courses should expect to spend time reviewing and instructing about complex numbers as appropriate for the topic. (Petzold/Zheng) passed. The committee does not see anywhere in the curriculum where complex numbers are taught in such a way that our students can use them constructively. Therefore, they should be introduced and taught as part of our classes, as appropriate.
Review of Table 19, from the 2006 Comp.E. Self Study.
More assessment on ethics and better essays for ethics assessment are felt to be in order.
2. Technical writing:
It could be possible to link an Engl. 332 section with a lab course
in ECE, creating a very specific technical writing class that covers our needs. This class would be at least 3 credits, and could be come 4 credits over time. Also, General Education may impose a goal area of “Information Literacy,” which could be covered as part of the ENGL 332 curriculum.
Meeting Adjourned.
