Curriculum revision – obtain ideas and suggestions from SAC.
Dr. Petzold discussed possible changes in EE curriculum:
- In place of required ECE 431 and ECE 451 plus 3 EE and senior electives, and idea of Emphasis Electives and Breath Electives sequences is suggested.
- ENGL 332 (Technical writing) is added and will be tied with ECE 461 (senior design course)
- ECE 311 materials will lean towards Digital electronics.
- Several courses are switched around in the courseplan.
Suggestions/concerns from SAC:
- Students who are out of sequence or who are not follow the course plan might have some difficulty taking courses in senior year.
- It will be very useful for students to know in advance (1-2 years) what Emphasis sequences will be offered.
- Students prefer an idea of learning about devices (ECE 381) before ECE 311 and 312
- Some students prefer taking ECE 422 before taking senior design class.
Dr. Petzold discussed possible changes in CompE curriculum:
- An idea of Emphasis electives plus senior/tech elective is presented, in place of required core course in senior year. ECE 381 and ECE 312 become electives or are included in Emphasis electives.
- ENGL 332 (Technical writing) is added and will be tied with ECE 461 (senior design course)
- ECE 311 materials will lean towards Digital electronics.
- Several courses are switched around in the courseplan.
- Students will finish CSCI 300-level courses by junior year which allow students to take CSCI 400-level courses in their senior year.
Suggestions/concerns from SAC (in addition to above):
- An idea of taking CSCI 301 before the end of sophomore year which might help students obtaining an internship.
- Students like an idea of finishing CSCI 300-level courses by junior year
General concerns:
- Students show concerns about some classes in CSCI
- Senior design class: the first meeting should be earlier than what the department usually does to give students more time to talk to each other and talk to their senior design advisor. The team should be more multi-disciplinary and they suggest that the department should strongly encourage the students to choose their partner from other programs (EE with CompE, EE with MME, CompE with MME, or with other departments)
Program Educational objectives revision – no concern or suggestions
