Other Awards and Scholarships

Non-Traditional Student Scholarship- Applications Due February 15, 2008

On-Line Application- Click Here to Apply
The purpose of this scholarship is to assist non-traditional students (25 and over) who wish to enter SCSU for the first time, who have interrupted their studies and now wish to continue them, or who are presently enrolled students. Financial need is a major consideration. Part and full-time students are both considered. Those seeking a career, a career change, or upward mobility in their present career are especially encouraged to apply. The applicant’s goals and philosophy should demonstrate a commitment to equal employment opportunity. Applications are available in CSOLD beginning in mid-October.

The history of the scholarship comes out of something everyone can relate to, which is food. At one point in time the Alumni Association and Continuing Studies co-sponsored a Women’s Day on the SCSU campus. This event was coordinated by Tom Macgillivray and Dorothy Simpson. When the campus outgrew the need for this event the money left over was put towards a Non-Traditional Student Scholarship.

As time went on Macgillivray and Simpson worked together to sponsor alumni tours to our International Studies program in England— Alnwick Castle. During the trip Barb Macgillivray wrote a cookbook titled A Yankee in King Arthur’s Kitchen, which was based on Barb’s and the participant’s favorite recipes. Once someone from SCSU caught wind of the cookbook a press release was sent to the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. The cookbook was featured in the Sunday edition of the food section. As a result orders for the cookbook were taken from six different states. Money made from the cookbooks was donated by Barb Macgillivray as the base for the non-traditional scholarship endowment.

Dennis M. Thayer Leadership Award

The Dennis M. Thayer Leadership Award celebrates excellence in leadership among leaders. The award is given in recognition of the student receiving the highest score in the Excellence in Leadership Awards process. It is in memory of a man who, in his brief lifetime, demonstrated the highest level of regard for leadership by all and for all.

Dennis dedicated his educational and professional career to developing leaders through his ability to see the greatest potential in everyone. Dennis served as a role model throughout his life: as a quarterback of the football team, Resident Assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Steven's Point, Director of Stearns Hall, and as Director of University Organizations on our campus. Dennis believed that it was his responsibility and privilege to guide, mentor, encourage and support the leaders of tomorrow, whether it was by remembering their name with a friendly hello, or listening as they worked through a problem. His style of leadership will always be remembered.
