Model of Learning Outcomes
Learning outcomes define the goals of a college education. What should students know, be able to do, or be able to demonstrate when they have completed this experience?
Learning Reconsidered (NASPA/ACPA, 2004) defines learning as a "comprehensive, holistic, transformative activity that integrates academic learning and student development..." (p.2). This definition provides the base for seven broad groups of learning outcomes that Higher Education as well as the University seeks to enhance in students. SCSU seeks to develop these capacities in students through the overall campus experience (both curricular and co-curricular). The SCSU Division of Student Life and Development encourages six broad intended learning outcomes are to be integrated in considered in the learning outcomes for the Fraternity & Sorority experience
Foundations
Smith et al. (2004), states that higher education has a grand vision to 'build communities of engagement and create teaching and learning environments that enable students to become competent citizens. Learning communities were designed by early education pioneers to improve the ways we learn and live.
Fraternity & Sorority Learning Communities are comprehensive 'high- breds" of the traditional models and provide a structrual platform for integration of the college experience. The curricular and co-curricular learning are espoused and linked together in the values, mission, and purposes these type of organizations. the student learning and development are intertwined, inseparable elements of the student experience.
We view SCSU Fraternities & Sororities as one large learning community – the “interconnectedness of student learning

Assessment & RecognitionThe SCSU Fraternity & Sorority Community participates in an annual assessment & recognition award program based upon the mission and values of the Fraternity & Sorority Learning Community. The intention is to be a "Chapter of Excellence"! “Excellence is not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.” Each spring academic semester, SCSU fraternities & sororities submit a written presentation of their engagement & experiences with regard to: 1) positively effecting intellectual development 2) values clarification and integration 3) developing leadership skills and abilities 4) developing lasting relationships (brotherhood/sisterhood, 5) creating an atmosphere of cooperation 6) developing citizenship through service Following the submition of their written packet, each fraternity & sorority formulates a presentation to a panel made up of faculty, administrative faculty, graduate students, and invited special guests. Each group has 30 minutes to communicate and expand upon what they sumbitted in their written packets. The panel will forumulate questions and inquiries in regard to the written material and presentation. A focus is on how the individual students and their fraternity/sorority have made meaning of their experiences in these core areas. This is to include how they plan to further their strengths and challenges. The panel utilizes a rubric to assess the written submitions, presentations, and overall responses to their inquiries. The individual fraternities/sororities are evaluated on thier development, operations, and growth in each of the six core areas. Each group is eligible for recognition in each core area as a stand alone award. A fraternity/sorority that meets all six core areas or award is also a "Chapter of Excellence" rating at SCSU! Each individual fraternity/sorority can achieve "Chapter of Excellence" as well as achieve each core area award. Recognition is revealed each year at the SCSU annual Excellence in Leadership Awards & Recogntion program. (April) |
