Public Safety Executive Leadership

Purpose

The PSEL Master’s Program is an advanced interdisciplinary course of study for inservice public safety professionals, including law enforcement, courts, corrections, fire, EMT, dispatch, probation and private security areas, with an emphasis on managing in public safety agencies and building upon the practical experiences of the student.

PSEL Master's Degree holders will provide their organization and community with the vision, leadership and ethical decision-making skills necessary to maximize the quality of life through the provisions of high quality public safety services.

This will be accomplished through an innovative collaborative effort of the participating MnSCU institutions building upon the unique strengths of each university.

Mission Statement

The PSEL Master's degree will help prepare inservice Minnesota public safety leaders to:

  • Be current on the latest news, techniques and policies regarding leadership methods and styles, management decision-making, budgeting, adoption of electronic technologies and human relations issues.
  • Assess and develop effective personal leadership skills.
  • Locate and evaluate quantitative research data to apply to agency problem-solving
  • Develop an awareness, understanding and appreciation for racial, gender and cultural diversity issues in public safety.
  • Listen to and partner with community officials, leaders and organizers.
  • Develop meaningful plans for addressing their changing work environment.
  • Cooperate across public safety agencies within the community to improve public safety.
  • Solve complex internal and external problems.
  • Improve their ethical decision-making framework.
  • Strategically plan and advocate participatory management.
  • Provide experienced managers with skills to address the challenge of their agency.
