Personal Counseling: Anything that causes you to feel anxious or uncomfortable may affect your academic performance, your personal interaction with others, as well as your sense of self-esteem. Discussing your concerns with a counselor on an individual basis in a trusting and confidential atmosphere can be helpful. Counseling may help you to understand your struggles and assist you in working through those feelings in a productive way.

Career Counseling: Undergraduate and graduate students may assess their skills and abilities, interests, and work values, and explore the variety of options open to them regarding majors, occupations, and careers. Career assessments and a computerized career exploration program (DISCOVER) support this process.

Crisis Intervention: We have daily times available for emergencies regarding undergraduate and graduate student safety and well-being, including suicide related concerns, threats to other persons, sexual assault, depression or other issues that lead you to feel an immediate need for our services.

Group Counseling: Undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to discuss topics and issues that concern them in a group setting with the assistance of a professional counselor. At different times throughout the academic year groups are initiated around various themes (i.e., assertiveness, self esteem, test anxiety, life planning, eating disorders, ADHD/ADD issues, adult children of alcoholics, Non-Traditional students, self-esteem and other areas as requested.)

Consultation: Provided to undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, academic staff and university administrators who are concerned about the behavior of others.

Outreach: We offer workshops, seminars, classroom and residence hall presentations on a variety of mental health topics such as: self esteem, time management, career choice, relationships, depression, eating disorders, stress management, and personality styles. E-mail requests for outreach presentations to Nancy Rassier or call CAPS at 308-3171.

Assessment: Assessment instruments are sometimes used as an aid in focusing on personal goals and developing self-understanding. Various assessment instruments are available which help to measure vocational interests and individual characteristics. You and your counselor decide whether assessment may be useful and appropriate for you. There is a fee for these services.

Educational/Academic Counseling: Educational counseling deals with such problems as study skills, time management, motivation, or coping with anxiety connected with test taking, public speaking or other academic endeavors.
