Advanced Mediation Training - Best Practices Series
Interest-based (or facilitative) Model of Mediation vs Transformative Model of Mediation
Background: Does transformative mediation really accomplish anything? Does interest-based mediation worsen the conflict? Can you solve the problem and transform the conflict at the same time? Interest-based mediation has been around for some time now and seems to work effectively in a variety of areas including collective bargaining. The transformative mediation is a relatively new model of mediation and differs significantly from interest-based. This workshop explores the similiarities, differences, opportunities and challenges of each mode.
This workshop is tentatively scheduled for .

30-Hour Basic Mediation Skills Training
Background: The 30 hour basic mediation skills training teaches participants the process of mediation. Mediation is a process that uses a third party neutral in order to help parties in a dispute come to a mutually agreeable resolution, if possible. Workshop participants will learn the mediation process as well as participate in a number of different role plays designed to give "hands on" experience in conducting and participating in a mediation.
This training will take place Monday through Thursday, October 27 - 30. The workshop will be from 8:00am to 5:30pm on Monday through Wednesday, and 8:00am through 12:30am on Thursday. Registration will be from 7:30 - 8:00am on Monday, October 27. This workshop has been certified in the past by Minnesota Rule 114 and we will again seek certification.
The 30-Hour Basic Mediation Skills Training will be offered approximately the third or fourth week of April and October every year.
Course Audience: This training is designed for those individuals who are interested in becoming a mediator and conducting mediations. The course is also designed for those who deal extensively with conflict resolution in their current positions, such as human resource directors, administrators, managers, liaisons, advocates, and attorneys. Any professional who would like to increase their conflict resolution skills is welcome to attend. Community members are also welcome to attend.
Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this training.
Course Cost: The cost of the training is $745.00. Early bird registration is $695.00, if you register by October 1, 2008.
Trainers: The following trainers will conduct this workshop: John Kuderka, Alan Olson, Lance Teachworth and Theresia Fisher. John Kuderka, retired, was formerly a mediator with the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services (BMS). Alan Olson is currently a mediator with BMS. Lance Teachworth, retired, is the former Commissioner of BMS. Theresia Fisher is the Director of the SCSU Institute for Alternative Dispute Resolution. Guest speakers include Tom Zupanc, Baba Odukale and Debra Leigh. All of the trainers and guest speakers, with the exception of Ms. Leigh, are qualified neutrals under the MN Rule 114 Civil/Hybrid roster. Tom Zupance and Theresia Fisher are also qualified neutrals under the MN Rule 114 Family roster.
Registration, Lunch, and Parking: Lite morning, afternoon refreshments are included with registration. Lunch is on your own.
