Pathways for Incarcerated Students

Tuition and Fees

In 1994, The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was passed which precludes students incarcerated in federal or state facilities from qualifying for financial aid, guaranteed student loans or Pell grants. Students with Veterans Administration education benefits may use them to offset some of the fees.

Students who need financial assistance may consider approaching a charitable group, institution, or business. Many civic, church, service, or professional groups have offered some financial assistance when they understand the benefits of earning college credit for the incarcerated student. Locating such aid is not easy, and SCSU does not keep a list of groups to approach; but the number of students who have met success in obtaining aid is encouraging.

NOTE: Please be sure that such solicitation of aid is permitted by the correctional institution.

Currently a three credit course will cost the student $650.37, a two credit class $453.58, and a one credit class $256.79.
