FUNDING YOUR EDUCATION
In 1994, The Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act was passed which precludes students incarcerated in federal or state facilities from qualifying for financial aid, guaranteed student loans or Pell grants. Students with Veterans Administration education benefits may use them to offset some of the fees.
Students who need financial assistance may consider approaching a charitable group, institution, or business. Many civic, church, service, or professional groups have offered some financial assistance when they understand the benefits of earning college credit for the incarcerated student. Locating such aid is not easy, and SCSU does not keep a list of groups to approach; but the number of students who have met success in obtaining aid is encouraging.
There is one scholarship fund reserved solely for incarcerated students: The Prison Scholar Fund. Although this fund is very competitive, some Pathways Program student have successfully earned this scholarship to fund part of their education. For more information on this scholarship, please visit: prisonscholarfund.org.
NOTE: Please be sure that such solicitation of aid is permitted by the correctional institution.
