Math Corps

The Minnesota Math Corps is a program that assists 4th-8th grade students in becoming proficient in mathematics at grade level.

The Minnesota Math Education Challenge: In 2007 Alice Seagren, Commissioner of Education noted that, “Even though Minnesota is heralded for its commitment to education, we have one of the worst achievement gaps in the nation.” Statewide 42% of 8th grade students are not math proficient.

Math skills are becoming increasingly important to success in the workforce. The U.S. Dept of Labor projects that science and engineering jobs will grow by 21.4% from 2004-2014. There is an increasing need for math savvy workers to maintain and improve economic competitiveness and growth.

Math continues to be critically important to academic success.  Beginning with the class of 2010, Minnesota students will be required to pass the Graduation-Required Assessment for Diploma (GRAD) which includes algebra based mathematics. Students must pass the GRAD to receive a high school diploma.

The Minnesota Math Corps Model: In the Minnesota Math Corps, members are intensively trained to work one-on-one with 4th-8th grade students who are not proficient in math. The member uses a prescribed research-based mathematics intervention program and conducts regular progress monitoring and assessments to ensure each student is on track toward proficiency in math. Members typically serve between 6-12 students for an average of 60-90 minutes/week. In addition the member participates in AmeriCorps programming including civic engagement and personal/professional development training.
