All of us have been engaged in unresolved conflict and we have experienced negative consequences such as stress, frustration, and wasted time. When we are in a conflict situation we spend a lot of time thinking about "what we said," "what he said,"" why did he say that," "I should have said yes to that," "why isn't she helping me," ....
Although conflict is a natural part of life, unresolved conflict can be costly in many ways. Organizations, corporations, neighborhoods and individuals with unresolved conflicts experience difficulties such as increased sick time, loss of productivity, lower morale, higher turnover, and dissatisfaction with a lower "quality" of life. The stress of conflict takes its toll on all of us.
Surprisingly, conflict can be looked upon as good. This discovery can lead us to a growth opportunity. Can you think back to a conflict you had and when you look back you smile and acknowledge what you've learned from it? Since conflict is inevitable in all of our lives perhaps we should focus on the perspective that we all can learn from conflict.
Got a dispute? Who doesn't!
From time to time, each of us needs help with conflicts. Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is a response to a conflict which helps the people (parties) in a dispute by adding a neutral third person to the situation. This neutral person does not decide the outcome of the dispute but helps the parties reach their own resolution. Many times adding a neutral person to help the parties work on their dispute is all the conflict needs to come to a conclusion or a much better place. We are not destined to be best friends with everyone but we can increase our productive and collaborative relationships. We all want to live in peace.
