Facilitated Conversations

A facilitated conversation is an informal meeting between two or more parties involved in a dispute. Conducted by a trained facilitator, a facilitated conversation helps individuals communicate during potentially difficult sessions. These informal conversations might be between employees, an employee and their supervisor or manager, a board of directors, council members, or even between neighbors. With direct and respectful conversations, individuals can often move to a reasonable and mutually acceptable conclusion.

Coaching

Coaching consists of a one-on-one confidential consultation with a trained conflict coach. This process allows individuals to talk through the process of resolving current disputes and/or preventing issues from escalating. Coaching can also be used to teach new skills in managing conflict or conducting difficult conversations with others. Individuals work confidentially with one of the Institute’s trained conflict resolution coaches on areas specific to the individual’s or organization’s needs.

Formal Mediation

Formal mediation involves a neutral third-party mediator meeting with the participants involved in a dispute. The mediator acts to encourage and facilitate the resolution of a dispute without prescribing the resolution. While the process is formal, it is designed to be non-adversarial, with the objective of helping the disputing individuals reach a mutually acceptable agreement. Mediation is voluntary and confidential, and allows individuals a safe space to discuss the issues surrounding their conflict. Our trained mediators can conduct mediations of any size, between two or more individuals or between entire departments. Mediators are specially trained to manage conflicts concerning collective bargaining agreements, workplace disputes, and discrimination and harassment issues. We will work with your legal, affirmative action, or human resources department to facilitate a process that works within your organization’s requirements.
