Academic Program
The Planning and Community Development program at St. Cloud State University offers a B.A. major and minor in Planning and Community Development. This degree is designed to prepare students for professional careers in city planning, economic development, transportation planning, housing, downtown development, community organization, and environmental management. Our graduates have secured positions in a variety of urban, suburban, and rural settings.
Program Features
Planning and Community Development is an applied career-oriented major. Through class activities and discussions, community based research projects, guest speakers, and a required full semester professional internship, students gain the necessary tools and experience to be successful in this field.
The program strongly emphasizes communication and leadership skills. Students of Planning and Community Development learn to speak, write, and interact effectively, both as individuals and in groups.
The major is organized to cater to the individual needs and interests of each student. All students receive close advising from their faculty advisor. The program is small enough to enable a community setting where students and faculty know each other and work together.
Each year the Minnesota Economic Development Foundation provides competitive scholarships for Planning and Community Development majors at SCSU, and funds two $2500 internship awards with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (St. Paul) and two $1000 internship awards with cities throughout the state. Additional funding opportunities for students exist through the Kent Robertson Memorial Fund.
Every major participates in a full-semester internship that is designed to provide students with hands-on professional experience, enhance their network of professional contacts, and meet the student's individual interests. Recent internship placements have included:
