What can I do with a Communication Degree?
"A degree in Communication Studies has allowed me to open doors beyond
my area of emphasis. The ability to present myself, my work and ideas,
and my knowledge, in a succinct manner has created opportunities for expansion
of careers. I have secured positions in sales, human resources, business
development and management. The flexibility of my degree has allowed
me to explore career options without being stereotyped as a talent in
a single field."
Rob Fuglie, Communication Studies, 1998
The Department of Communication Studies works to extend the knowledge,
appreciation, and skills that contribute to the full understanding and
practice of effective communication.
Employers cite many of the same qualities when they describe what they
look for in applicants for hiring and promotion:
- Oral and Written Communication
- Teamwork
- Listening
- Interpersonal Communication
- Critical Thinking
- Problem-solving
- Leadership
An education in Communication Studies will prepare you for many careers.
The things you learn and put into practice in our classes are what both
workers and employers say are most important in almost any career.
And just as important, these are the same characteristics that enable
you to be active citizens and to develop healthy personal relationships.
People must communicate effectively to achieve success in education, business,
politics, government, the community and the family.
Our programs also provide a strong foundation for graduate school. Graduates
from our department have earned M.A. or Ph.D. degrees from respected
institutions and now teach at the college level. Others have earned law
degrees and are now practicing attorneys.
A degree program in Communication Studies prepares you in all of these
arenas. That's why graduates in Communication Studies achieve success
in a variety of careers.
