A Communication Studies Internship may be for you!


Gain 'hands on' experience and earn university elective credit.

What is a CMST Internship?

  • Supervised student field experience
  • Within an approved agency or organization
  • For academic credit (CMST 444, 8-16 university elective credits - determined by nature of internship and hours worked; summer internships are limited to 8-10 credits.)
  • Primary focus on communication
  • Designed to enhance the academic experience through applied learning

Internship Dates

    

Fall, Spring and Summer 2011-2012

 

Mandatory Seminars:  all students planning to intern must attend the pre-intern seminar and the 5 internship seminars scheduled during the internship (or must organize an alternative strategy in discussion with the internship academic director at the time of the learning agreement process). 

 

Internship Interest Meetings:

Fall 2011 Internships - 16 weeks

Begin:  August 22

End:  December 16

Credits Possible:  8-16

Required (Mandatory) Fall Interns Seminar Dates 3-5:00 pm, R 201

Seminar - I      Friday, September 9

Seminar – II    Friday, October 7

Seminar – III   Friday, November 4

Seminar – IV Friday, December 9

Seminar – V    Friday, December 16

Site Visits:  Most will be October 19 and 20 and October 25 and 27.

Spring 2012 Internships - 16 weeks

Begin:  January 9

End:  May 6

Credits Possible:  8-16

Required Pre Intern Seminar for Spring 2012 Interns: Thursday, November 10, 3-5 pm, R 106

Required (Mandatory) Spring Interns Seminar Dates 3-5:00 pm, R 201

Seminar - I      Friday, February 3

Seminar – II    Friday, February 24

Seminar – III   Friday, April 6

Seminar – IV Friday, April 27

Seminar – V    Friday, May 4

Site Visits:  Most will be scheduled March 13, 15, 20 & 22.

Summer 2012

Begin:  May 14

End:  August 3

Credits Possible:  8-9

Required Pre-Intern Seminar for Summer 2012 or Fall 2012 Interns:  April 9, 5 - 7 p.m., R 106

Required (Mandatory) Summer Intern Seminar Dates (tentative) 2-4:30 pm, R 201

Seminar - I      Friday, June 15

Seminar – II    Friday, July 6

Seminar – III & IV   Friday, July 27

Final paper & portfolio due Monday, July 30.

How do I qualify to intern in Communication Studies?

  • Declare a CMST major or minor
  • Junior or senior year
  • Complete all of the communication minor or half of the communication courses required in the major
  • Complete either CMST 341 or 441
  • Interview with the internship director at least one semester prior to the internship semester
  • Use department & personal resources to secure internship anywhere
  • Attend pre-internship seminar semester prior to internship
  • Design learning agreement with department internship director in order to secure permission to register for the internship
