Department Memory:
From a professional standpoint it has been interesting to observe the changes that have occurred in the discipline that today is called Communication Studies.  As an undergraduate student with a major in "speech and dramatic arts" (B.S. '62) the department curriculum included pubic address, oral interpretation, speech pathology, drama, and theater and radio.  As a newly appointed assistant professor in 1971, the areas of communication disorders and theater had recently split off to form their own departments.  The area of radio and televsion was soon to form it's own department.  New curriculum was developed in communicaton theory and interpersonal communication and the department was renamed "speech communication".  Within ten years, programs emerged in performance studies, intercultural communication, and organizational communication.  Although teaching majors were dominant in the 1960's - '70's, the emphasis turned to interpersonal and organizational in the 1980's - '90's.

The age old question "What is a speech major anyway?" remains a challenge for the department.
