From a professional standpoint it has been interesting to observe the changes that have occurred in the discipline that today is called Communication Studies. As an undergraduate student with a major in "speech and dramatic arts" (B.S. '62) the department curriculum included pubic address, oral interpretation, speech pathology, drama, and theater and radio. As a newly appointed assistant professor in 1971, the areas of communication disorders and theater had recently split off to form their own departments. The area of radio and televsion was soon to form it's own department. New curriculum was developed in communicaton theory and interpersonal communication and the department was renamed "speech communication". Within ten years, programs emerged in performance studies, intercultural communication, and organizational communication. Although teaching majors were dominant in the 1960's - '70's, the emphasis turned to interpersonal and organizational in the 1980's - '90's.
The age old question "What is a speech major anyway?" remains a challenge for the department.

When I retired in 1992, I had 93 advisees (majors and minors). I sometimes wonder what became of them. What I missed most upon retirement was the classroom interaction; it was beyond simple enjoyment; it was just plain fun. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling vocation! Over my 21 years at SCSU, I was privileged to teach 23 different courses, of which I designed and/or overhauled 13 (of course, all in the quarter system), my favorite being "Ethics and Free Speech" and "Impersonation Speaking."

I finally have time to work on my hobbies, including spinning and woodworking. I've been doing some genealogy and family history research also. For two years, I've worked part-time as a newspaper reporter for three small papers published in Todd County where I now live. It's been great to have the opportunity to travel also. In 2005 I spent 18 days in Croatia and Slovenia. In 2006 I traveled to Romania and Hungary.

Have become interested in the connection between brain research and learning. Most interested in attention, concentration, creativity and, as I age, continued functioning.
Thanks to all my colleagues in the Department of Communication Studies for sharing the ride for 24 years. Our department is one of the best on campus and I was always proud to be a part of it. It made me very happy at NCA one year when someone asked me, "How does St. Cloud State continue to attract so many great faculty?"

I had dinner with Jill Rudnitski, Vice President for Advancement, who waited to take SPC 161 with me until the last quarter of her senior year. I also had a beautiful letter this year from one of our majors, Doreen Boettcher, who appreciates and uses daily, the skills and concepts learned in the department.
I am looking forward to the 30 year reunion of our Denmark group. Tom Bryne, a minor in Speech is organizing the event.

Interaction with staff and students is missed very much. Something new and interesting was happening every day. SCSU is a fine university, with a great student body and staff.
Come on up and take a ride on the lake, pontoon in summer, snowmobile in winter!

I taught mostly Interpersonal and small group communication. I served on various departmental, college and university committees and served as chair for a three year term.
Current Interests and Activities: Carol (my wife) and I travel quite a bit. I've written a novel and plan to write some more. We like to spend time seeing our sons and their families, particularly our one grandchild Aliza, age 6.
Department Memory: It was interesting when I was the sole major advisor with 80 some advisees - I was never lonely in my office - there was always a line outside the door. I remember some fun events, like the time Bob Kendall had his class wheel a piano into my classroom and sing "Happy Birthday" to me.
One final thought: I hope that the faculty and staff never lose that touch of caring about our students and realizing that the students are why we are there.

Department Memory: My time at St. Cloud was rewarding in every way. We had a superb faculty in the Communications Department that cared especially for the success of each student. Diversity in the student body was beneficial to our department and to the University.
