Undergraduate Programs

Bachelor of Science - Information Media

All of the St. Cloud State Center for Information Media programs are geared to help prepare you for a career in the worlds of information and technology. Students learn to create, use, and manage technologies for effective teaching and learning in a wide range of settings.

  • Technology trainer
  • Multimedia designer
  • Library technician [Media aide]

We are one of five programs across the country that prepares undergraduates for jobs in training and development. Or maybe you're more interested in managing multimedia design, creating presentations that integrate video, audio and the Web working with graphic arts specialists. Or perhaps you're thinking about working in the schools or other libraries as a Library Technician - Media Aide. The variety of courses within the Information Media major offers students a wide range of experiences: from working with computers to producing multimedia and video presentations, from studying research methods to discovering the cultural applications and relevance of information technologies and practices. The faculty prepares students to become proficient in using the primary tool of the computer age - information. In addition, internships offer students practical experience in the field, which gives students an advantage when job-seeking.

Information Media Study and Employment

The outlook for jobs in training, multimedia design, and technology support is strong and expected to grow between 27% and 31% in the next seven years but will still be competitive. The outlook for library technicians shows average growth, with stronger growth projected for special libraries. Further study is required for those seeking to be School Library Media Specialists or public librarians. The IM degree prepares graduates well for advanced study in these areas. Job market research demonstrates that employers are looking for talented job candidates who have in-depth training in gathering, organizing, and presenting information for effective learning. They want people who effectively use the electronic information gathering resources that have made possible the rapid sharing of data and ideas commonplace to the 21st century. Information Media classes teach these contemporary skills. Students take classes in information literacy, web/multimedia design, and instructional design and training. Citing this major on a resume provides a competitive edge, allowing one to both find and be successful in an information-based career. Did you know that for the last five years, over 90% of our graduates have successfully gone on to employment or advanced study in the field?

Information Media is also an excellent companion to majors, such as computer science or education.
