Application and Admission Process
Admission to Information Media Graduate Program
Acceptance to Graduate School
Written Exam (Time limit: 2 hours)
The preliminary exam focuses on you and will be evaluated on your communication skills: organization, style, format, grammar, punctuation, expression, and content. A detailed information sheet is available from the Center Administrative Assistant (MC110) and on the Application and Forms page.
Preliminary Oral Interview (Time limit: 1/2 hour)
Graduate committee members will meet with you for your oral interview. It will be evaluated on: identification of purpose for entering the field of media, expression of media philosophy, general oral expression, statement of professional goals, and providing perceptive feedback.
The written and oral interview should be scheduled early in your program after consultation with your adviser. After the written and oral interview are evaluated, a decision will be made regarding your acceptance into the IM Program, and this decision will be communicated to you by a letter.
Program of Study
Before you have completed 9 graduate credits, you must file your Program of Study with Graduate Studies. While students elect a Track at the time of admission, the selection of one of the three plan options (A- Thesis; B-Starred Paper; C-Portfolio) is made at the time the program is filed. This Program of Study is planned in consultation with your adviser at the time of preliminary exam. Your program of study is a listing of the courses you intend to take to earn your degree. This document becomes your "contract" with the University. Both sides agree to uphold their parts of the commitment: you, to complete the agreed upon classes, and the University to grant you a degree. Because of the binding nature of this document, it can only be changed by petitioning Graduate Studies. (Use the petition form.) To avoid unnecessary petitioning, you might list only the required courses in each section on the program form. The remainder of the required credits in each section could be listed as "credits to be selected with consent of adviser." All Program of Study forms can be obtained in the Center for Information Media office (MC110).
