Deadlines and Milestones (Transition Points)

For students with current teaching license (TP#s 1-3 accomplished via initial licensure program completion).

  1. Initial Transition Points
    1. Application is submitted to Graduate Studies and student is admitted to graduate studies.
    2. Student meets with an adviser regarding career goals and program requirements.
    3. Written Exam and Preliminary Oral Interview are completed successfully for admission to IM program. (See directions and evaluation form)
    4. Program of Study is completed by student in consultation with adviser and filed.
      1. Program of Study specifies courses to be taken
      2. Student selects plan (A – Thesis, B – Starred Paper, C – Portfolio)
  2. Continuation Transition Points
    Completion of course work
    1. Student completes all courses specified in Program of Study up to IM682 and IM608 successfully.
      1. Student maintains a 3.0 GPA (B average) in all graduate courses taken. SLMS TP #4
    Pre-clinical
    1. Student completes written self-assessment based on competencies
    2. Student completes the application for internship.
    3. Student, on-site supervisors(s) and SCSU practicum supervisor agree upon goals for the practicum.
    Clinical
    1. Student completes the required journals and reflective evaluation paper
    2. Student arranges for on-site visit(s) between student, on-site supervisor and SCSU practicum supervisor.
      1. During the on-site visit (s), student successfully demonstrates competencies agreed upon as goals. (IM682, 1-3 cr.)
    Post-Clinical
    1. The site supervisor and SCSU practicum supervisor evaluate the student's practicum experience.
    2. Student successfully completes SLMS Subject Matter Test (Praxis II) SLMS TP #5
    3. Student takes IM608.
      1. Course is completed successfully.
      2. Proposal for Thesis, Starred Paper, or Portfolio is written.
  3. Final Transition Points
    1. Student applies for media licensure. Licensure awarded.
    2. Thesis, Starred Paper, or Portfolio is written.
      1. Final draft of proposal is completed in consultation with adviser.
      2. Plan A (Thesis) or C (Portfolio) – Schedule preliminary proposal meeting at least one semester before planned graduation date.
      3. Successfully complete Thesis, Starred Paper, or Portfolio
        1. Plan A (Thesis) or C (Portfolio) – Schedule final meeting
          1. Final draft of paper is accepted by committee.
        2. Plan B (Starred Paper) - Final draft of paper is accepted by adviser.
      4. Submit final copies of paper to committee.
    3. Student successfully completes comprehensive written exam.
    4. Student completes oral exit interview and survey.
    5. Degree awarded
  4. Follow-up Transition Points
    1. Students are followed up via a web survey to determine job satisfaction and program satisfaction.
    2. Students (and employers) complete a survey from the Dean’s office SLMS TP #6
