Instructional Technology Certificate

The graduate level Instructional Technology Certificate, offered by the Center for Information Media (CIM) at St. Cloud State University, combines theory with application in a 10- to 12-credit program.

College graduates seeking advanced learning in instructional technology find a viable, career-enhancing option in earning this certificate. Students work directly with technology to develop projects that demonstrate their growing understanding of instructional and information theory.

Student Learning Outcomes

Standard 1: DESIGN
Candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to design conditions for learning by applying principles, theories, and research associated with instructional systems design, message design, instructional strategies, and learner characteristics.

Standard 2: DEVELOPMENT
Candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to develop instructional materials and experiences by applying principles, theories, and research related to print, audiovisual, computer-based, and integrated technologies.

Standard 3: UTILIZATION
Candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to use processes and resources for learning by applying principles, theories, and research related to media utilization, diffusion, implementations, and policy-making.

Standard 4: EVALUATION
Candidates demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions to evaluate the adequacy of instruction and learning by applying principles, theories, and research related to problem analysis, criterion-referenced measurement, formative and summative evaluation, and long-range planning.

Time and Place
The certificate courses, as with most of the courses in the CIM master’s degree programs, are offered at convenient times for people who may already be employed. CIM offers the certificate courses in the evening during fall and spring semesters and in the daytime during summers. Some courses are also offered through interactive television (ITV) to sites throughout Minnesota.

Master’s Degree
All certificate courses will apply to the three Master of Science degree programs offered by the Center for Information Media. After earning a graduate certificate, students will be well on the way to earning a master’s degree in Information Technologies, Educational Media or Instructional Design and Training.

Instructional Technology Certificate courses
Requirements (10-12 credits)

IM 504 – Instructional Design I
3 credits (Fall, Summer)
Provides the underlying theory for the field of Information Media.

IM 554 – Developing Skills for Online Learning
3 credits (Fall, Summer)
A hands-on course in using computer software to produce materials for teaching and training.

IM 555 – Design and Preparation of Multimedia Presentations I
3 credits, (Spring, Summer) Prereq: 454/554
Participants plan, design and produce effective instructional and informational electronic presentations.

Additional 1-3 credits chosen, with consent of adviser, from the following:
