Design for E-Learning Certificate

The graduate level Design for E-learning certificate, offered by the Center for Information Media (CIM) at St. Cloud State University, is intended for people interested in increasing their use of distributed learning technologies in schools, business, government, and industry. The certificate complements other majors, especially those in education and business. People may also take these courses as continuing education to upgrade their skills.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Candidates will apply knowledge and skills in learning design, multimedia production skills, and creative abilities to design instructional strategies, content structure and tasks, and use on-line techniques for assessment and evaluation of learning packages which are distributed over computer network.

  2. Candidates will apply knowledge and skills in project management and implementation.

  3. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge and technical and tool skills for authoring, creating interactions, animations (such as Flash or Director), use of CMS (Course management System) or LMS (Learning Management System) applications, and use of Web tools.

  4. Candidates will demonstrate knowledge and skills in facilitation of synchronous and asynchronous interaction and administration of online instruction.

Entrance Requirements for SCSU Graduate School

Candidates must have:

  • A baccalaureate degree
  • Completed an application form for the Design for E-Learning Certificate program
  • Paid the application fee (fee is waived if you have been admitted to a master’s degree program at SCSU)

    Acceptance into the graduate school permits students to attend graduate courses at SCSU. It does not automatically admit them into the Information Media graduate program, requirements for which are given below.

Entrance Requirements to the Information Media Design for E-learning Certificate

Candidates must have taken IM 554 and IM 555 or equivalent courses or assembled and presented a portfolio demonstrating equivalent skills. Applicants planning to work toward the Design for E-Learning Certificate should meet with a graduate adviser in the Center for Information Media.

Design for E-learning Program of Study
Required: 12 credits – Graduate level

IM 504 – Instructional Design I
3 credits – Fall, Summer
Introduction to instructional design, including theoretical background, needs assessment, learner analysis and instructional strategies.

IM 546 – Facilitating and Administering E-learning
3 credits – Fall (online only)
Theory and techniques of administering distributed education programs and service. Emphasizes distributed learning management theory and skills, and e-learning process facilitation. Advisors recommend that students take this course during the earlier part of their work toward the IM Design for E-Learning Certificate. Basic computer skills required.

IM 556 – Design and Preparation of Multimedia Presentations II
3 credits – Fall
Systematic approach to the production of instructor-independent multimedia presentations for informational and self-instructional lessons. Includes needs assessment, format selection, presentation design, equipment selection and operation, and media production. Lab.
Prereq.: IM 504, IM 555, or equivalent.

IM 656 – Computer-based Authoring
3 credits – Spring
Theoretical background of instructional resources including microcomputer hardware and software; the selection, use and evaluation of existing programs; and individual experience planning, designing and producing programs. Prereq.: IM 556.
