Deadline: Applications for Fall 2010 will not be accepted until early March. Check back then for the exact date.

Questions concerning any of the scholarships may be addressed to any Chemistry Department faculty member.

An unofficial copy of your transcript must be included when you submit the completed application form.

The Chemistry Departments awards scholarships twice a year. Over the past 16 years, the department has awarded over 289 scholarships totaling over $38,000. The department will be making awards for Fall Semester, 2010 in early March.

Awards are made to qualified chemistry majors or minors and B.S. Teaching-Chemistry Emphasis majors and are based on both scholarship and progress toward completion of the major or minor. Awards will be subject to a maximum of $1,000 per student per baccalaureate degree.

All students receiving a scholarship must be enrolled for a minimum of twelve credits during the semester in which the scholarship is received.

There are three types of scholarships offered by the Chemistry Department. At this time, applications are only being accepted for the Chemistry Department Scholarship.

Chemistry Department Scholarship

The Chemistry Department Scholarship is an award for one semester which varies in amount and may be received more than once. To be eligible, you must be admitted to or filed an application for a chemistry major or minor or a B.S. Teaching-Chemistry Emphasis major. A minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 in chemistry courses is required and you must have completed a minimum of eight credits of chemistry at SCSU.

David Sorensen Scholarship

The David Sorensen Scholarship is a $300 scholarship ($150 for fall and $150 for spring semester) for outstanding performance during the first two years of chemistry at SCSU and may be received only once. To be eligible, you must be admitted to or filed an application for a chemistry major or minor. Transfer students are not eligible. The student must be a second year student at SCSU and have completed Chem 210, 211, 310, and be enrolled in Chem 311 and have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0 in chemistry courses.

John Laakso Scholarship

The John Laakso Scholarship is a $500 scholarship ($250 for fall and $250 for spring semester) for our top senior-level student and may be received only once. To be eligible, you must be admitted to or filed an application for a chemistry major or a B.S. Teaching-Chemistry Emphasis major. A minimum G.P.A. of 3.5 in chemistry courses is required and you must have completed a minimum of twenty-five credits of chemistry at SCSU.
