Chemistry Placement Exams

CHEM 141

Students who have completed high school chemistry may wish to consider taking the placement exam for CHEM 141 (Intro to Organic and Biological Chemistry). A passing score on this placement exam means you will be able to register for CHEM 141 without first completing CHEM 131 (Introductory Chemistry for Health Sciences). Prior to registration for CHEM 141, students must have either completed CHEM 131 or passed the placement exam.

CHEM 210

Before registering for CHEM 210 (General Chemistry 1) you need to take a placement exam (unless you have already completed CHEM 160 (Preparatory Chemistry) with a grade of “C” or better). The exam will test math skills (such as algebra and complex functions) and fundamental chemistry concepts (such as mole, stoichiometry, atomic structure, formulas and equations).

For those students who plan to take 210 this coming spring:
There are three outcomes for the exam. The highest scoring students can register for CHEM 210, the middle scoring students must coregister for CHEM 110 when they take CHEM 210, and the lowest scoring students need to register for Chem 160 (Preparatory Chemistry) and receive a “C” or better in CHEM 160 before taking CHEM 210.

For those students who plan to take 210 next summer:
There are two outcomes for the exam. The higher scoring students can register for CHEM 210. The lower scoring students must register for CHEM 160 (Preparatory Chemistry) this summer and receive a “C” or better before taking CHEM 210.

Exam Schedule

Both exams will be given at the times indicated below. It is not necessary to sign up ahead of time. Please show up ten minutes prior to the start of the exam. Please bring a photo ID, a pencil and a non-programmable calculator to exam. The exam will usually be scored as soon as you complete it.
