Niloufer Merchant has been a professor in the Community Psychology undergraduate and Community Counseling Graduate programs at St. Cloud State University since 1991.  She is an active member of the American Counseling Association (ACA), serving as President of the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW, a division of ACA), in 2011-12.  Most recently she was elected to serve as an ASGW representative to the Governing Council for ACA for the term starting Fall 2014-17.  Additionally, she was named a Fellow for ASGW in 2014.  She has held other leadership positions, including Department Chair, 2004 - 2010; Board President for the Multicultural Center of Central Minnesota, 2005-2007; Interim Director of the SCSU Women’s Center, 2002- 2003; and Interim Cultural Diversity Director for St. Cloud School District,1999-2000.

Niloufer is a Licensed Psychologist and National Certified Counselor, providing clinical and consulting services in the community. She also provides in-services and trainings in the area of cultural competence. Her research and clinical interest areas include group work, multicultural counseling and competence, social justice issues, mind-body healing, mindfulness practices, and trauma.
