Do you offer assessment testing to assist my son or daughter in identifying a career interest?

The Career Services Center offers a variety of career exploration and assessment tools that can help students to evaluate their interests, values and abilities and choose potential majors and careers. Are there professional staff available to meet with my son or daughter?

Absolutely! The Career Services Center has trained counselors to assist students with career exploration, major decisions, job searching, resume writing and any other career related issues your student may have.

Does the Career Services Center help students with part-time job opportunities?

Within the Career Services Center there is a Student Employment Services office that lists on and off campus job opportunities for students. Student Employment Services also hosts two job fairs each year. For more information click here: Student Employment Services.

Do many SCSU students get internships?

Internships are a valuable way for students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. Every year hundreds of students work at internships. Some of them are identified through the Career Services Center while some are located through students’ academic departments.

When should a student begin to use the Career Services Center?

It is never too early to explore the variety of services offered by the Career Services Center. Even as a freshman or prospective student, the Career Services Center offers resources on career exploration and planning. Each freshman student will receive an Academic and Career Planning Portfolio from the Career Services Center during their first semester. This portfolio has a four-year planning guide that may assist students throughout their education to facilitate student’s academic and career planning efforts. The portfolio also contains a list of campus resources that can assist students with academic and career planning.

What services are provided for graduating students seeking a full-time job?

A wide range of services are available to assist students with their job search. Through on- campus interviews, students can participate in actual job interviews with real employers. Students may also register with the Career Services Center; in doing this, resumes are referred to potential employers. Furthermore, the Career Services Center offers career fairs each year allowing students to explore different career fields, employers and types of employment. The Career Services Center website also hosts a wide variety of career and job searching information. Numerous seminars on a variety of topics regarding the job search process are conducted each year, individual career counseling appointments and resume and cover letter critiques are also offered as a free service. In addition, the Career Development Council (a student organization sponsored by the Career Services Center) hosts mock interviews, employer panels and professional image seminars each year.

How can parents and family members play a role in helping their students with the job search and career exploration process?

Parents and family members can play a key role in assisting students to make the most of resources available. By encouraging your student to utilize the Career Services Center as soon as possible, he or she will best be able to take advantage of all we have to offer. Your support and understanding as they go through this process enables and empowers students to make informed decisions and take control of their careers.

Do you charge a fee to use the Career Services Center?

No. All services offered by our office, including on-line services, are free to SCSU students and alumni.

Who would my son or daughter consult regarding credit for an internship?

It is up to the individual academic department as to whether or not credit is granted. Students will need to consult their internship advisor within department to learn more.

When is on-campus recruiting for graduating students?

On-campus recruiting begins in September and runs through April.

Where are the interviews conducted?

Interviews are conducted in the interview rooms in the Career Services Center. When students arrive for an interview, they will need to check-in. At that time, they will be directed to the appropriate interviewing room.
