Special Course Fees
Special course fees may be established to cover personal property and services associated with a course, the costs for which are not included in standard educational operations.
Special course fees must be in compliance with Minnesota State Colleges and Universities Board Policy 5.11 and Board Procedures 5.11.1.
Special course fees may include, but are not limited to: consumable materials, liability insurance, private lessons, travel costs, or off-campus facility rental. Materials covered by a special course fee will become the property of the student. The charge shall not exceed the average full cost of the materials or services.
All special course fees must be approved in advance and are required to be published in the course schedule. Failure to acquire approval prior to the printing of the course schedule will result in denial of the fee.
Each term, the department chairperson must complete a Supplemental Course Fee Request Form (pdf) for each supplemental fee. The form is routed for review and approval:
- Associate Vice President for Administrative Affairs
If any of the designated individuals deny a request, they will provide written notification to each previous signatory.
After final approval, copies of the form will be forwarded to Business Services and Records & Registration. The Records & Registration Office will update the Master Course File for inclusion in course publications. Business Services will update ISRS so that charges are generated in accounts receivable upon student registration for the course.
