EDMOND, Okla. -- Defending NCAA Division II national champion Nebraska-Omaha is the unanimous pick to retain its title in 2010, according to the preseason poll released Wednesday by the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.  St. Cloud State University, which placed eighth in the nation at the NCAA Division II championships in 2009, has been picked eighth in the 2010 preseason poll.

UNO received all eight first-place votes in balloting of coaches from around the country to finish with 160 points and earn the No. 1 tag.  Minnesota State was second in the poll with 148 points, followed by Newberry (S.C.), Nebraska-Kearney and Adams State. Rounding out the top 10 is seven-time Division II champion Central Oklahoma, Western State (Colo.), St. Cloud State (Minn.), Upper Iowa and Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.).

The Huskies and Upper Iowa were both tied for 8th place with 95 points apiece in the poll.

Individually, SCSU's senior Jake Roberts was ranked eighth among the nation's Division II wrestlers at 149-pounds.   Junior John Sundgren was ranked 8th at 157-pounds this season, while sophomore Tad Merritt was ranked second in the nation at 165-pounds in the DII preseason poll.  At 174-pounds, junior Derek Skala received a third place ranking, while sophomore Luke Munkelwitz completed the ranked Huskies with an 8th place ranking at 197-pounds.

Of note, Roberts, Sundgren, Merritt, Skala and Munkelwitz all qualified for the NCAA Division II national meet last year.  Skala earned All-America status with a seventh place finish at 174-pounds, while Merritt placed third and earned All-America status at 165-pounds for the Huskies.

SCSU will open its season on Nov. 8 with the annual Red/Black Classic inter-squad match in Halenbeck Hall.  Of note, the NCAA championships this season are set for March 12-13 in Omaha, Nebraska.
