Wrestling wins 6th straight

The Huskies John Sundgren garned the evenings only pin, and in doing so led the Huskies to the 23-12 comeback win over MSU Moorhead.

St. Cloud, Minn. – The St. Cloud State wrestling team took their first lead in their dual with MSU Moorhead after John Sundgren (Blaine, Minn.) recorded the only pin in the meet’s sixth match.  The Huskies would go on to win three of the final four matches and secure their sixth straight dual meet with the 23-12 final.

Sundgren wasted little time in taking control of the 157 lb. match, and before the first period horn sounded, he had recorded the fall at the 2:43 mark.  The win was the fifth straight for Sundgren and put the Huskies up 12-9.

Sixth ranked Tad Merritt (Canby, Minn.) lost a hard fought 8-6 decision at 165 lbs. in the first overtime to eighth ranked Tallen Wald.  The Huskies and Dragons were tied at 12-12.

For the second straight match, fans were treated to an extra session and this time it was the Huskies’ 174 lb. Derek Skala (Owatonna, Minn.) scoring the takedown for the 8-6 win to put his squad ahead 15-12.  Skala’s takedown came just before time expired, to break the 6-6 and 12-12 ties.

After going ahead, Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.) sealed the win at 184 lbs. with a technical fall in the meet’s ninth match.  Padgett used three successive near falls it the second period to extend his lead to 20-3, and earn the tech fall at the 4:12 mark, in the process giving the Huskies an insurmountable lead of 20-12.

Lucas Munkelwitz closed the match with a 3-1 decision at 197 lbs. for the final score of 23-12.

SCSU opened the meet with losses in three of the first of the first five matches before mounting the comeback.  After going down 0-6 Josh Williams (Banks, Ore.) gave the Huskies their first win with his 4-1 decision at 133 lbs.  After a loss at 141 lbs to go down 3-9, Jacob Roberts (Jordan, Minn.) began the Husky comeback at 149 lbs. with his 5-4 decision.

MSU Moorhead drops to 6-11 and the Huskies improve to 8-3 in dual meet action on the season.  They will return action on Sunday, Feb. 15 with a 2:00 pm NSIC dual on the road at Upper Iowa.  The Peacocks are currently the #10 team in the nation.  SCSU will then close the regular season at home with a 7:00 pm meeting against Minnesota State on Feb. 19.
