For the 3rd year in a row the St. Cloud State University wrestling team volunteered to lend a hand with the Mississippi River Clean-up, which is sponsored by the St. Cloud State University Outdoor Endeavors program. This year, 35 Husky wrestlers participated in the clean-up. Once again the wrestling team dominated the river clean-up effort by representing more than 75% of the total participants.
The volunteers spent 3 hours on Oct. 3, cleaning up the banks of the Mississippi River that borders the campus. The cold and wet weather did not deter them from doing their part in keeping the campus clean.
When asked about the weather and muddy conditions co-captain Tad Merritt said, "We came out here to do a job today, we can’t let a little cold and rain slow us down."
The volunteers bagged garbage and recyclable items from the river banks along with other miscellaneous items.
"I think it’s important for us to give back to the campus and community," said Husky Graduate Assistant Coach Cy Wainwright. "This is a beautiful campus and they should take pride in being a student here."
The Husky Wrestlers will also spend time reading to elementary students, assisting at the St. Cloud Veterans' Hospital and donating their time to youth at the area Boys and Girls Club.
