Fayette, Iowa – Upper Iowa took advantage of two quick pins and an 18-0 run to start the dual, as the Peacocks (11-4, 4-1) topped St. Cloud State (8-4, 5-1 NSIC) 21-17 Sunday afternoon at Dorman Gymnasium.
Two pins to start the match turned out to be the difference for UIU. Erik Rogness at 285 lbs. (Buffalo) and Pat LeVasseur at 125 lbs., (Buffalo Lake) fell at :56 and 6:16 respectively to put the Huskies in a 12-0 hole.
Josh Williams (Banks, Ore.) then took a tough 3-2 loss at 133 lbs. and Jon Schiewe (Chicago, Ill.) was shutout 6-0 at 141 lbs. to put the Huskies in a tough position.
The middle weights responded with five wins in the last six matches. Jake Roberts (Jordan) and John Sundgren (Blaine) posted shutout wins (5-0 and 2-0) at 149 and 157 lbs. to get the rally started and Tad Merritt (Canby) nabbed a 12-3 major decision at 165 lbs. to cut the Peacock lead to 18-10.
Upper Iowa won the last match they would need at 174 lbs., when Mitch Norton topped Derek Skala (Owatonna) 7-2. Brad Padgett (Buckley, Wash.) and Luke Munkelwitz (Forest Lake) won the final two matches by 10-3 and 16-5 counts, but it was too little, too late as the Peacocks ended with a 21-17 UIU victory.
Upper Iowa heads to Marshall on Friday to take on Southwest Minnesota State, while the Huskies will wrap up their regular season on Thursday at home against Minnesota State. Match time for the dual is set for 7:00 p.m.
