St. Cloud, Minn. -- St. Cloud State volleyball (7-21, 3-13 NSIC) snapped a nine-match slide on Saturday, Oct. 31, by sweeping the Augustana College Vikings (11-16, 6-9 NSIC) in three straight sets (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) on Halloween night.

First year Lauren Cipperly (Andover) dished out a career-high 33 set assists in the match, which marked just her second match of the season serving as the setter for the Huskies. Junior Kayla Tschida (Holdingford) led the offensive attack with 12 kills and four blocks (1s, 3a). Tschida also tallied two serving aces for the Huskies.

Defensively, Chelsea Nagle (Preston) posted 15 digs as the libero, while senior Stephanie Coxon (Waukegan, Ill.) and Tschida added 11 digs and 10 digs respectively.

"It was a great team effort all around," said head coach Patricia Gerchy (Mickow). "We passed well, kept our composure, and finally finished a match."

In the initial set, the Huskies jumped out to a 3-1 lead after a kill from Tschida and a setting error and attacking error by Augustana players Dani Haley and Megan Bezdicek. Augustana knotted the set at 3-3 with back to back kills. Augustana went on to take a 14-11 lead before the Huskies inched their way back into the set to eventually take a 19-17 lead after a kill from junior red-shirt Alecia Lunde (East Bethel) and a setting error from the Vikings.

Holing a one-point advantage at 22-21, the Huskies rallied to score the next three straight points off kills from Tschida, Ashley Shields (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Taylor Beebe (Verona, Wis.) to win the first set 25-21.

After falling behind 4-8 following a six-point run by Augustana, the Huskies climbed their way back into the second set to even the score at 14-14. Kills from sophomore Erica Beacom (Elkhorn, Neb.) and Tschida gave the Huskies a two-point advantage at 16-14. St. Cloud State held on to the lead following two kills from Beebe and another kill from Beacom to take a demanding 24-19 lead.

Cipperly served set point for the Huskies and Tschida sealed the set victory with a kill from the middle to give the Huskies a 2-0 set lead heading into intermission.

Intensity mounted in the third set as St. Cloud State vied for its first match victory and sweep since Sept. 12 against Quincy. The Huskies jumped out to an early 6-2 lead and never looked back, holding the lead until Augie knotted the score at 19-19. The Vikings took their first lead of the set at 20-19 after an attacking error by SCSU’s Lunde. St. Cloud State was quick to tie the score at 20-20 following a service error by Augie’s Dani Haley.

From that point on, the lead changed three times and there were four ties before SCSU collected a crucial side-out to take the lead at 25-24 after yet another Viking attacking error.

Again, it was first year setter Lauren Cipperly serving for set and match point for the Huskies. SCSU kept the pressure on Augustana and the Vikings suffered yet another attacking error from the middle hitter to give St. Cloud State the 26-24 set win and match victory.

With the win, the Huskies split with the Vikings this year in league action, and improve to 7-21 overall and 3-12 in the NSIC. Augie continues to lead the all-time series over SCSU, 39-17, dating back to 1982.
