Aberdeen, S.D. – Although the St. Cloud State volleyball squad (6-20, 2-12 NSIC) garnered its first set victory since Sept. 26, the Northern State University Wolves downed the Huskies in four sets (18-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-17) to improve to 9-13 overall and 4-10 in the league on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Wachs Arena.
"We played hard today," said SCSU’s head coach Patricia Gerchy (Mickow). "Kayla (Tschida) played extremely well for us again today and now we need to concentrate on getting healthy to prepare for Wayne State (Neb.)."
Tschida led the squad with 14 kills (.256), eight digs, two solo blocks and four block assists.
SCSU’s Chelsea Nagle (Preston) was assigned a new responsibility today, suiting up as the libero for the first time this season. The sophomore posted a career-high 29 digs in the loss and also added one set assist in the contest.
"Chelsea (Nagle) was also a bright spot for us today and played well as our libero," added Gerchy.
In the first set, the Huskies got off to a great start with a 5-1 lead. The Wolves climbed to within 7-10 of SCSU, but the Huskies scored the next six-of-seven points to garner a demanding 17-8 advantage. St. Cloud State went on to take a 20-11 lead before NSU inched their way back into the initial set at 17-22.
The Huskies took advantage of three Wolves attacking errors in the last five points of the set to earn the set win and snap a 21-set drought for SCSU.
Northern State went on to win the next three sets by scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-17 to take the match victory.
St. Cloud State will return home on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, for league matches against Wayne State (Neb.) (Oct. 30) and Augustana College (Oct. 31). Both matches will be played in SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall.
Volleyball fans…the St. Cloud State volleyball team is asking fans, family and friends to rally together to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness. At all the home matches in October (Oct. 9, 10, 30, 31), Husky volleyball will be selling DIG PINK T-SHIRTS at the doors for $10 and will also be taking pledges to KILL CANCER. Individuals can pledge as much as they desire for each kill the Huskies have during that match.
All proceeds will be donated to the 2009 Dig Pink Rally Fund Raising Effort through the Side-Out Foundation (www.side-out.org).
Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held all of October to raise awareness and funds. Every year we want to make a statement by holding hundreds, potentially thousands, of featured High School and College matches across the country to help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease. Proceeds will go towards doing something significant and identifiable in the fight against Breast Cancer.
