Bismarck, N.D. – The University of Mary Marauders volleyball team (7-17, 1-12 NSIC) garnered its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match victory of the season over St. Cloud State (6-19, 2-11 NSIC) on Friday, Oct. 23, topping the Huskies in three straight sets (25-15, 25-18 and 26-24).

After dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-18, St. Cloud State found momentum after the break and took a demanding 24-19 point lead in the third set.

U-Mary was able to sideout after a kill from Lauren Wells to cut the Husky lead to 24-20, and that seemed to be the good luck charm for the Marauders, as U-Mary rattled off the next six straight points of the set to take the 26-24 set and match victory.

Of note, the Huskies have not won a set since Sept. 26, when the Huskies defeated Minnesota, Crookston in a 3-2 match victory.

Kayla Tschida (Holdingford) was the bright spot for the Huskies tonight, as she was the lone Husky in double figures in kills with 13 (.333) from the middle. The junior also chipped in with nine digs, one block solo and one block assist.

"Kayla (Tschida) left everything she had on the court tonight," said SCSU’s head coach Patricia Gerchy (Mickow). "She is a great leader for our team, and now we need to regroup and focus on tomorrow’s match against Northern State."

Erica Beacom (Elkhorn, Neb.), Alecia Lunde (East Bethel), Ashley Shields (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Taylor Beebe (Verona, Wis.) each added five kills from the front row, while junior setter Kiersten Mormann (Omaha, Neb.) led the squad with three block assists and 32 set assists in the match.

St. Cloud State will continue NSIC road action tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, Oct. 24, as the Huskies will suit up against Northern State University at 3 pm. To view live stats from Northern State, click here.
