Alecia Lunde

Alecia Lunde led the Huskies with 10 kills against MSU.

Mankato, Minn. – St. Cloud State volleyball (6-18, 2-10 NSIC) put up a valiant effort against No. 10-ranked Minnesota State Mavericks on Saturday, Oct. 17, however fell in three straight sets (25-18, 25-15, 25-22) at MSU’s Taylor Center.

Alecia Lunde (Bethel) ignited the Husky offense, posting 10 kills (.258) on the outside and adding two digs, respectively. Kayla Tschida (Holdingford), Brittany Novak (Lethbridge, Alberta) and Lauren Cipperly (Andover) each added four kills offensively for SCSU.

Once again, it was first year libero Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa) leading the way defensively with 22 digs and Chelsea Nagle, a sophomore defensive specialist from Preston, was the second Husky in double digit figures in digs with 13.

Minnesota State jumped out a two-set lead in the match with 25-18 and 25-15 set wins to start the evening. In the third and final set, the Huskies found momentum after spotting the Mavericks an 11-0 lead. SCSU’s Erica Beacom (Elkhorn, Neb.) tabbed a kill on the right side and a serving ace to bring the Huskies to within six points of the Mavericks at 9-14.

MSU gained the sideout and went on to take an 18-10 lead. With their backs against the wall, St. Cloud State clawed its way back into the set, rattling off six of the next seven points to come within two points of MSU, 19-21. The Mavericks held on to their two-point advantage for a few more sideouts, but following an MSU attacking error, the Huskies were right back in the set, trailing 22-23.

Minnesota State was able to take advantage of an attacking error by SCSU’s Justine Buskirk (Papillion, Neb.) and that’s all the momentum the Mavericks needed as MSU’s Kimber Kuhl connected for her fourth kill of the evening to seal the 3-0 match victory and improve the Mavericks to 21-3 overall and 11-1 in the NSIC.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 6-18 overall and 2-10 in the league. Of note, SCSU has not won a set since Sept. 26, when the Huskies defeated Minnesota, Crookston in a 3-2 match victory.

St. Cloud State will resume action on the road next Friday, Oct. 23, at the University of Mary.
