With the win, UMC split with SCSU in conference play in 2009 as the Huskies continue to lead the all-time series with Minnesota, Crookston 9-5, dating back to the 1999 season.
Before the match, St. Cloud State honored its three seniors in Alecia Lunde (East Bethel), Kristen Stott (Radisson, Sask.) and Stephanie Coxon (Waukegan, Ill.) for Senior Night.
In the initial set, the Huskies were down early to the Golden Eagles, 4-11, but rallied back from the deficit to knot the game at 15-15. Rookie defensive specialist Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa) served five straight points to tie the set for the Huskies. The two teams traded points back and forth until St. Cloud State gained an important point following a UMC attacking error to take a crucial 23-22 advantage.
After a UMC timeout, St. Cloud State rattled off the next two points to take the first set 25-22 after a kill from senior outside hitter Kristen Stott (Radisson, Sask.) and an attacking error by UMC’s Amanda Swann.
Once again, the Huskies found themselves trailing early in the second set, 4-8. SCSU came as close as 10-13 with a kill from Stott, but the Golden Eagles found the momentum to tally six straight points off serves from Janie Bauer to take a demanding 23-14 lead.
St. Cloud State managed to score three more points in the set with kills from first year middle hitter Taylor Beebe (Verona, Wis.) and Stott, but heading into intermission with the match even at one set apiece.
The third frame proved to be yet another nail biter as five ties were garnered. The last tie was recorded at 17-17. UMC took advantage of a Husky attacking error and a serving ace from Shannon Cologna to gain a 20-17 lead. The Golden Eagles relied on Amber Meyer to rest of the way, as the junior outside hitter put down four kills late in the set to give UMC the match advantage, two sets to one, over the Huskies with a 25-22 victory in set three.
St. Cloud State controlled the fourth set, winning by a score of 25-15. SCSU’s Kayla Tschida (Holdingford) was back in the line-up tonight after misses yesterday’s match against MSU Moorhead. The junior middle hitter pounded away a kill from the right side to give the Huskies the initial 1-0 lead, and SCSU never looked back. Rookie setter Lauren Cipperly (Andover) served a string of six points for the Huskies as SCSU took a convincing 13-4 lead. UMC chipped away at the SCSU lead, trailing 8-15, but SCSU’s offense proved to be too much as the Huskies cruised to a 25-15 victory in the fourth set after a UMC serving error from Janie Bauer.
The fifth and final set of the evening kept the 211 fans at Halenbeck Hall on the edge of their seats. UMC jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but St. Cloud State held its composure, cutting the Golden Eagle lead to just one point a 8-7 with a kill from sophomore hitter Erica Beacom (Elkhorn, Neb.). After exchanging sides, UMC rallied to a take a 12-9 advantage after an attacking error by SCSU’s Cipperly.
Tshida cut the UMC lead to 10-12 will a kill from the right side, but two straight kills from UMC’s Amber Meyer gave the Golden Eagles an important 14th point to take a 14-10 lead over SCSU. Once again Tschida came through for the Huskies in crunch time, garnering her 21st kill of the evening to keep SCSU alive at 11-14. Minnesota, Crookston was able to receive Tschida’s serve in the last play of the match and posted the set and match victory with a kill from Margo McHugh on the weak side.
With the win, UMC improves to 3-14 in the league and 6-23 overall in 2009.
Stott had a career evening for the Huskies, posting her second double-double of the season with 10 digs and 13 kills. Tschida led the way in the front row, pounding away 21 kills, which marks a season high for the junior co-captain.
Defensively, sophomore libero Chelsea Nagle (Preston) had a solid night, posting 26 kills to her name. Coxon added 14 digs and Madden chipped in with 13 digs in the back row.
St. Cloud State will continue home action on Saturday, Nov. 14, as the two-time defending national champions and undefeated Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears travel to town for a 4 pm match in SCSU’s Halenbeck Hall.
