VOLLEYBALL: St. Cloud Volleyball Weekly Notes

SCSU's first year outside hitter Lauren Cipperly came in to set this past weekend after back-up setter Kiersten Mormann went down with an ankle injury.

THIS WEEK’S MATCHES: St. Cloud State volleyball heads to Bemidji State on Tuesday, Nov. 3, for an NSIC match at 7 pm. The Huskies will then return home for matches against MSU Moorhead on Friday, Nov. 6, and against Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday, Nov. 7. Friday’s match is slated for 7 pm in Halenbeck Hall with Saturday’s match beginning at 5 pm.

SENIOR SALUTE: The Huskies will be honoring their three seniors before Saturday’s match against Minnesota, Crookston. Those seniors include Alecia Lunde (East Bethel), Kristen Stott (Radisson, Sask.) and Stephanie Coxon (Waukegan, Ill.).

THE RECORD: SCSU is 7-21 overall in 2009 and 3-12 in the league, good for a 12th place ranking in the NSIC. For complete 2009 statistics, click here.

EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST THE BEAVERS: Bemidji State swept St. Cloud State in Halenbeck Hall earlier this season on Oct. 10 by scores of 25-23, 32-30 and 25-20.

EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST THE DRAGONS: St. Cloud State was swept earlier this season by MSU Moorhead on Sept. 25. The scores of that match were 25-18, 25-22 and 25-15.

EARLIER THIS SEASON AGAINST THE GOLDEN EAGLES: The Huskies pulled out a barn-burner of a match against Minnesota, Crookston earlier this season on Sept. 26 in five sets. The Huskies won the first two sets 25-14 and 25-18. The Golden Eagles rallied back to win sets three and four by scores of 25-17 and 26-24. In the fifth and final set, SCSU edged UMC 17-15 for the match victory.

STREAK SNAPPED: St. Cloud State snapped a nine-match slide on Saturday, Oct. 31, with a 3-0 sweep over Augustana College (25-21, 25-20, 26-24) in Halenbeck Hall. The sweep was the Huskies first since Sept. 12 over Quincy.

A NEW FACE AT SETTING POSITION: First year outside hitter Lauren Cipperly answered the call after SCSU’s back-up setter went down with an injury in the first set against Wayne State (Neb.) on Friday night in Halenbeck Hall. Cipperly took over the setting responsibilities and posted a then career-high 20 set assists for the Huskies in the match against the Wildcats. On Saturday, Cipperly took charge, running the Husky offensive systems, and led SCSU to a sweep over Augustana College, marking the first sweep for SCSU since Sept. 12 against Quincy. In just her second career match serving as the setter, Cipperly dished out a career-best 33 set assists against the Vikings. She also added a block assist, two kills and 13 digs on the weekend.

TRUSTY TSCHIDA:  Kayla Tschida was solid yet again for the Huskies this past weekend, posting 19 kills (.211), two serving aces, 12 digs and nine total blocks (1s, 8a) in six sets played. The junior team co-captain came through in the clutch, serving a perfect 1.000 on the weekend, to help lead the Huskies to a sweep over Augustana College, snapping a nine-match slide for SCSU.
