St. Cloud, Minn. -- The No. 15-ranked Wayne State College (Neb.) Wildcats downed the St. Cloud State volleyball squad (6-21, 2-13 NSIC) in three straight sets on Friday, Oct. 30, in SCSU's Halenbeck Hall. The scores of the sets were 25-15, 25-19 and 25-17.

First year Lauren Cipperly (Andover) made her first appearance as a setter tonight for the Huskies after junior setter Kiersten Mormann (Omaha, Neb.) went down with an injury in the first set. Cipperly dished out a career-high 20 assists in the loss.

In the initial set, the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a kill from junior middle hitter Kayla Tschida (Holdingford). But that was the only lead the Huskies would hold in the first set, as Wayne State (Neb.) rallied for two three-point stretches and another run of five straight points to gather the 25-15 set victory.

St. Cloud State found momentum in the second set, taking a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats cracked the scoreboard. Two kills in a row from junior outside hitter Ashley Shields (Milwaukee, Wis.) gave SCSU a 7-4 lead. WSC began to chip away at the Husky lead and eventually tied the set at 10-10. SCSU regained the lead, taking advantage of two consecutive attacking errors by the Wildcats to take a 14-11 lead.

Wayne State’s (Neb.) Jennifer Hefner took matter into her own hands and served five straight points to give the Wildcats an 18-15 lead. SCSU refused to back down, and following a kill from Shields, inched its way back into the set, knotting the score at 18-18. WSC garnered the next four points to jump ahead of the Huskies 22-18. In the end, Wayne State (Neb.) took advantage of two SCSU attacking errors to close out the set, 25-19.

The final set had the Wildcats written all over it, as WSC rattled off six straight points behind the serve of Tali Fredrickson to take a commanding 8-4 lead. The Huskies cut the Wildcats lead to just one point after three straight WSC attacking errors, but fell victim to the serve of Jennifer Hefner once again. The Huskies struggled siding out from Hefner’s serve, as the junior middle blocker served seven consecutive points midway through the set to give the Wildcats a demanding 16-8 lead. A kill from WSC’s Madison Pernicek sealed the match victory with the 25-17 win.

St. Cloud State was led by Shields with nine kills on the outside, while junior red-shirt Alecia Lunde (East Bethel) led the squad with a .400 attacking percentage and four kills on the outside. Tschida was strong in the front row, charting five block assists in the contest. First year defensive specialist Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa) was the lone Husky in double figures in the back row with 10 digs.
