VOLLEYBALL: St. Cloud State Weekly Notes

· For the first time since the 2001 season, St. Cloud State will host a volleyball tournament on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4-5, in Halenbeck Hall.
· Joining the Huskies in the tournament will be teams from Ferris State University, Upper Iowa University, University of Nebraska-Kearney, Wayne State (Neb.) College, and Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T).
· In the tournament the Huskies will play Nebraska-Kearney at 11:30 a.m. and Missouri S&T at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 4. On Sept. 5, the Huskies will play Wayne State and 3:30 p.m. and Upper Iowa at 7:30 p.m.
· St. Cloud State volleyball opened the 2009 season at the Northern Michigan Wildcat Open on Aug. 28-29. The Huskies went 1-3 overall on the weekend.
· The Huskies gained their first victory of the season over Lake Superior State University on Saturday, Aug. 29, in three straight sets (25-19, 25-12, 25-18).
· Junior outside hitter Ashley Shields (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Husky offensive attack with 56 kills in 16 sets played at the Wildcat Open.
· First year players Taylor Beebe (Verona, Wis.), Lauren Cipperly (Andover) and Sarah Madden (Van Meter, Iowa) made their collegiate debuts at the Wildcat Open on Aug. 28-29.
· Sarah Madden has taken over the roll as the new libero this year, replacing former Husky Andreana Pieper (2005-08), an All-American Honorable Mention libero. Madden garnered a career-high 19 digs against UW-Parkside on Saturday, Aug. 29, and leads the squad with 63 digs in 16 sets played (2.31 dps).
· Kiersten Mormann (Omaha, Neb.), SCSU’s junior setter, dished out a career-high 40 set assists against Wisconsin-Parkside.
