The Patricia Gerchy (Mickow) Story

Patricia Gerchy (Mickow)Patricia Gerchy (Mickow) garnered her 300th career victory on Saturday, Aug. 30, as St. Cloud State University volleyball gained its first win of the 2008 season with a 3-0 sweep over Southwestern Oklahoma State University at the Middle of Everywhere Classic in Rolla, Mo.

She completed her seventh season at St. Cloud State University during the 2009 season and has tabbed a 70-141 overall mark with the Huskies since 2003.

In just her second season at SCSU in 2004, Gerchy guided the Huskies the NCAA Division II tournament for the first time since 1995.  The Huskies placed third in the always rugged North Central Conference and also gained a solid 19-11 overall record under Gerchy’s direction.

In seven years at SCSU, Gerchy owns a 70-141 record.  In her college coaching career, Gerchy is now 313-401 over a span of 21 seasons.

Gerchy comes to St. Cloud State University from Bemidji State University, where she served for one season as the head coach of the Beavers' volleyball program. In 2002, Gerchy led Bemidji State to a 11-17 record (8-10 NSIC) and helped double her team’s conference win record from the previous season.

A 1986 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, Gerchy was the first female athlete to gain Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in three sports in one year (volleyball, basketball and softball).  She received a master’s of science degree in physical education from Winona State in 1992.

Patricia Gerchy (Mickow)In addition to her season at Bemidji State, Gerchy served as head coach at Mayville State University in 2000 and 2001. She led the Comets to a 43-16 overall record during those two seasons, including a 28-7 finish in 2001.

Prior to her tenure at Mayville State, Gerchy worked at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D. from 1988 to 1994 and then again from 1996 to 2000. At Mount Marty College, Gerchy served as the school’s volleyball, basketball and softball coach.

Gerchy began her coaching career at Wabasha-Kellogg High School in 1986-87, and followed with a stint at Falls High School in International Falls from 1987-88. She briefly returned to the high school coaching ranks at Cedar Catholic High School and Holy Trinity Elementary in Harrington, Neb. in 1995-96, after serving one season as the volleyball coach at St. Mary's University (Winona) in 1994-95.

Gerchy is only the third coach in the history of the volleyball program at St. Cloud State. She replaced longtime SCSU coach Dianne Glowatzke, who retired at the end of the 2002 season after 26 seasons at SCSU with a 527-418 career record.

"All the ingredients are here for success: outstanding academics, a great location and excellent facilities,” Gerchy said. “In addition, as a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, we have the opportunity to compete against the best teams in the nation at the NCAA Division II level on a weekly basis. Those types of opportunities attracted me to SCSU, and I believe we are on track to continue the success that was started in 2004.”

Gerchy resides in St. Cloud with her husband John.
