National triple jump runner-up Heather MIller |
San Angelo, Texas -- St. Cloud State University junior Heather Miller (Sun Prairie, Wisc.) placed second in the triple jump to earn her second All-American honor at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Outdoor Track and Field Championships Friday in San Angelo, Texas.
Miller had an outstanding performance at the national championships setting a school record with her jump of 40-07.75. She eclipsed the old mark she set at the NSIC championships of 39-11.75 earlier this month.
It was an exciting finish as Miller took the lead and was in first place after her final jump with two other competitors to finish. On the second to last jump of the championships, Antionette Oglesby of Fort Valley State overtook Miller's mark to win the title with a jump of 40-09.75.
Earlier in the day, Miller placed fifth in the heptathlon with a personal record 5165 points.
"It was bittersweet," said Miller. "I was right there and I knew a national championship was possible but I am very happy with second place."
"Looking back I had a full year of training and I knew that would do a lot for me coming into the season. My goal was to get here."
Miller bettered her goal with two top-five finishes at the outdoor championships, giving her four All-American honors in 2009 as she had two top eight finishes in the triple jump and long jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Miller has had an outstanding 2009 season. She won three NSIC outdoor titles in the heptathlon, triple jump and 100 meter hurdles to lead the Huskies to a fifth place conference finish. She was named the NSIC Outdoor Women's Field Athlete of the Year and High Point Performer. During the NSIC indoor season, she won three titles, taking firsts in the pentathlon, triple jump and 55 meter hurdles.
