NSIC Heptathlon Champion Heather Miller

  


 Aberdeen, SD -- St. Cloud State University junior Heather Miller (Sun Prairie, WI) won the heptahlon at the 2009 NSIC Multi Championships and in the process broke the conference record with 4818 points, and automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships, May 21-23 in San Angelo, Texas. 

Miller, who led after the first day of the heptathlon had a solid performance in the second day events. She fared well in the long jump and had a strong race in the 800 meters. Miller went 18'5" in the long jump, best in the field, was ninth in the javelin with a throw of 88'1" and was first in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:23.86. Her total score of 4818 points broke the old NSIC record of 4755 points set in 2008 by Ashley Roemer of MSU Moorhead.

This is Miller's fourth individual NSIC title this year. In February she won the pentathlon, 55 meter hurdles, and triple jump at the NSIC Indoor Championships. She set a St. Cloud State school record in the pentathlon with 3686 points. 

Teammate and sophomore Kelsey King (Lakeville) improved on her second day to finish sixth overall. King had been in tenth place heading into the final three events. King finished the heptathlon with a personal record 4241 points. King was second in the long jump with a leap of 17'5 1/4", sixth in the javelin with a throw of 97'5", and seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.03.

In the men's decathlon, St. Cloud State was led by junior Andrew Stueck (Madison, WI) who finished in sixth place with 5809 points. Zac Preble of Bemidji State won the event with a score of 6223. In the final day of events, Stueck was 13th in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.86, third in the discus with a throw of 122'3", 11th in the pole vault at a height of 9'11 3/4", first in the javelin with a mark of 176'10",  and third in the 1500 meters in 4:48.85.

First year Dusty McColley (Franklin) placed eighth with a score of 5685. His marks included a 17.11 in the 110 meter hurdles, 87'4' in the discus, 12'8" in the pole vault, 146'5" in the javelin and 5:00.50 in the 1500 meters.

Junior Cris Jirele (Medford) was 11th overall with 5337 points. He ran a 17.14 in the 110 meter hurdles, landed at 91'7" in the discus, went 7'11 1/2" in the pole vault, 133'11' in the javelin, and ran the 1500 in 4:54.57.

First year Nick Nellis (Waupaca, WI) tallied 4933 points to finish in 13th place. Nellis had marks of 18.43 in the 110 meter hurdles, 92'11" in the discus, 12'11 3/4" in the pole vault, 148'2" in the javelin, and 5:33.78 in the 1500 meters.
